VR for Evacuation and Emergency Simulation

Evacuation drills have a problem: too few, done poorly

Evacuation drills are essential, but in practice they are rare, time-consuming and often treated as a formality. People evacuate calmly, already know the exit, there is no smoke, no stress. The result is that in a real emergency people behave differently: they seek the entrance they came in by, underestimate smoke, lose precious time.

Virtual reality bridges this gap: it can simulate evacuations with smoke, darkness, obstacles and stress, repeatable as often as needed, without stopping production or exposing anyone to risk.

The regulatory context

Managing fire safety in operation and in emergency is governed in Italy by the Ministerial Decree of 2 September 2021, which defines emergency plans, the designation and training of wardens and criteria for managing evacuation. Periodic drills remain a pillar: VR does not replace them formally, but enriches them by training behaviours that a "cold" annual drill cannot stimulate.

What VR trains in evacuation

Orientation under stress

In VR you can introduce smoke that reduces visibility, forcing people to follow signage and emergency lighting rather than memory. This is the behaviour that saves lives.

Recognising correct escape routes

The scenario can block an exit and check whether people find the alternative, training the reading of routes and assembly points.

Warden roles

Emergency wardens can rehearse assisting people with difficulties, checking areas and counting at the assembly point.

The evidence for VR

The PwC study found VR learners complete training up to 4 times faster than the classroom, feel 275% more confident and are 3.75 times more emotionally connected. Emotional connection is crucial in emergencies: we remember what we have "lived" with some arousal. The same principle applies as with 360° environments in training.

Fitting the path

VR fits naturally alongside fire safety training and emergency management and can be combined with the fire escape room for a complete experiential path: from theory, to a team puzzle, to immersive evacuation simulation.

In short

VR does not eliminate real evacuation drills, but makes them far more effective by training orientation, stress management and roles in realistic conditions. In an emergency you rise not to your intentions but to your training: VR lets you truly train.
